Aoyama est un écolier brillant, curieux de tout, et même un brin têtu. Il lui faut réfléchir à un tas de choses, et vite parce qu'il deviendra une grande personne dans quelques milliers de jours à peine. Pour l'instant, il doit se contenter de vivre l'existence d'un élève de quatrième année. De prime abord, ce n'est pas une vie déplaisante. L'été est enfin arrivé, et la fin des classes approche. Aoyama a le béguin pour une femme plus âgée que lui, rencontrée chez le dentiste, et qui l'entraîne maintenant aux échecs. En outre, une colonie de pingouins vient tout juste de se matérialiser au beau milieu de la petite cité dortoir où habite Aoyama. Qu'est-ce que ces drôles d'oiseaux viennent faire là, et d'où sortent-ils donc Mettant à profit de rigoureuses méthodes scientifiques, Aoyama et ses amis se lancent dans une mission de recherche. Hélas, les résultats de leur étude ne feront qu'amplifier le fascinant mystère.
